THEFUELFACTOR™

Athlete Preparation & Testing Protocol

Welcome to the Fuel Factor™ Sweat Test by Exact Fuel. During your appointment, we will be analyzing your unique physiology to determine exactly how much sodium you lose and how your body burns fuel during intensity.

To ensure the highest accuracy of your results, please follow this preparation protocol strictly.

Pre-Test Preparation

1. Hydration Status (Crucial)

Goal: Arrive ”euhydrated” (normally hydrated).

Action: Drink fluids normally in the day leading up to the test. Your urine should be a pale straw color.

Avoid: Do not ”hyper-hydrate” (chugging liters of water) just before the test, as this dilutes sodium concentration. Conversely, do not arrive dehydrated.

Alcohol: Please avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to testing, as it acts as a diuretic.

2. Skin Preparation

Action: Shower as normal, but DO NOT apply lotions, creams, or oils to your upper back or arms.

Why? Oils on the skin can contaminate the sweat sample, rendering the test invalid.

3. Caffeine & Stimulants

Action: Maintain your normal caffeine routine. If you usually have coffee before a workout, have it. If you don’t, skip it. We want to test your ”normal” physiological state.

What to Bring

Please pack your kit bag with the following:

Your Bike: Please bring a bicycle that is in good working order and compatible with a Wahoo Kickr Roll smart trainer.

Shoes: Bring your cycling shoes (clipless) if you normally use them. If you do not use clipless pedals, standard athletic shoes are perfectly fine.

Kit: Padded cycling shorts are recommended for comfort, along with a loose-fitting top or jersey that allows easy access to the upper arm or upper back.

Towel: To wipe away any sweat during the test.

Water Bottle: For hydration after the final weigh-in.

What to Expect: The Timeline

The entire test takes approximately 45-50 minutes.

Step 1: The Dry Weigh-In (10 Mins)

We will take your intake forms and record your precise body weight before exercise. Note: You will also empty your bladder immediately before this step.

Step 2: The Setup

We will clean a small area on your upper back or arm with alcohol to create a sterile site. We will then mount your bike to the Wahoo Kickr trainer.

Step 3: The Workout & Swab Collection (30 Mins)

You will perform a steady-state cycling workout on the trainer at a moderate intensity. We need you to sweat, but you don’t need to go ”all out.”

The Collection Method: We do not attach a permanent patch. Instead, every 10 minutes, we will briefly press a sterile gauze swab against the cleaned site to absorb the accumulated sweat.

Note: Depending on your sweat rate, we may need to swab more frequently to ensure we collect a viable sample.

Step 4: The Wet Weigh-In (5 Mins)

Immediately after exercise, you will towel off completely, and we will weigh you again. The difference in weight tells us your precise fluid loss rate.

Your Results

Immediately following the lab analysis (typically within 1 business day), you will receive your Fuel Factor™ Report, which includes:

Your Sodium Score: Exactly how much salt you lose per liter.

Your Sweat Rate: How fast you lose fluid.

Your Fuel Category: Are you a ”High Sodium + Low Carb,” or a ”Low Sodium + High

Carb”?

Custom Hydration Plan: Exactly what to drink for your next race or event if requested.

We look forward to seeing you!
